HOW DO WE HELP STUDENTS IMPROVE THEIR INFORMATION LITERACY?

Presentation

I am a Swedish teacher working at the high school/upper secondary level with students 16-19
years of age. My subjects are civics, social issues and law issues. For the past ten years I have been teaching in "English Class" meaning that I have taught civics in English. For the moment I only teach in Swedish.
My main interest is to help students to become more competent in information literacy.
I think that this competence is very important in any subject so I have during the past ten years systematically tried to increase the competence of my students to find information in an efficient way using suitable search strategies and to value their information with "critical eyes."
I have cooperated very much with our school librarian and other teachers. I think that the library is extremely important in working. with this I also think it is important to work systematically over longer periods.

I have been working with in-service training of teachers and librarians on information-
seeking (web catalogues, search engines…), critical review of sources and how to work
with these matters together with students from a pedagogical point of view.

INFORMATION LITERACY PLAN

At my previous school "Celsiusskolan we adopted a plan for information literacy of
our students based on different objectives and principles. We evaluate to what degree our
students reach these objectives:

General objectives and principles
When the students of "Celsiusskolan" leave they shall be professional in
information literacy. They shall be able to work with all the stages of the information
process - how to formulate a problem, gather information, structure and critically evaluate your
information.
To reach this objective the education has to be integrated from a holistic perspective.
Information literacy is being strengthened during the course of the education in a
systematic way where different perspectives are being deepened. There will also be
a close cooperation between different subjects as well as between teachers and librarians.
Information literacy is an integrated part of the education."

PLAN

Year 1

The students shall have an overview of different search techniques and an understanding of how important
it is to formulate a problem in a correct way.
In a qualified way be able to use the library catalogue and find the media they are looking for in
the library.
Be able to use a Swedish referenxe book i.e the national encyclopedia as well as a British i.e
Britannica online.
Know the difference between web catalogues and search engines and know how to use them.
Be competent to use at least one data base on articles.
Have a general idea of the importance of critically evaluating sources and be able to write
a list of sources in a correct way.

Year 2

Students shall
Be able to on a basic level do a critical evaluation of sources from the point of view of criteria
like authority, credibility and objectivity.
Have a very good capacity to use some web catalogues, search engines, data bases referring to
subject or articles.
Be able to write notes
have a basic knowledge of rights oforiginators

Year 3

Students shall
Be able to make a thorough critical evaluation of sources and also be able to compare
different sources.

Be able to write a log where they reflect on different search strategies.
Have an ability to reflect on ethic issues concerning internet.
Be able to understand the connection between how problems are formulated and different
ways of finding information.

STUDENT REPORTS

I´m working on creating a "bank" with well written student reports where focus is on search
strategies and criticism of sources. I can so far just publish three reports, but there will be more.

Reports

International conflicts. "Venezuela". Have a close look at "criticism of sources" and
"search strategy".
Project application. "Support to women being assaulted in Bangla Desh." Read preferably the last part
"web evaluation."
Project on "terrorism in South Africa and Zimbabwe - similarities and differences."
"Analysis" and "Detailed evaluation of two sources" are interesting.

These three reports at high school level I consider to be generally well written.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT….

You might have some technical problems with computers, but the most important thing is
to concentrate on pedagogical issues.
Working together with the librarian is vital.
Be conscious in your pedagogic work. What objectives do I have for this year? Next year?
How do I evaluate if I have fulfilled my objectives?
Integrate info-seeking and criticism of sources into your ordinary teaching.
Be concrete - show different web sites and discuss how to evaluate them.
Be systematic in encouraging students to use different sources.- encyclopedias, factual study
books, magazines, internet, interviews……
Encourage the students to take responsibility.- to make their own checklists when evaluating.
In  a systematic way apply the theory of Carol Kuhlthau (information seeking process)

CONTACTS - NETWORK

I am interested in getting in touch with other teachers and librarians to exchange experiences on how to work with students in information literacy.
